City Public Association “Centar Supolnasc”

NGO “Community Center”

Municipal Association “Community Center” was founded in Minsk in December 1995

The first Board was formed of individuals who were well-known for their activities in cultural and civic  fields in Belarus (Vintsuk Vyachorka, Ales Bialiatski, Gennady Saganovich and others).

Name of the organization lead us back to the past tradition of the famous “Belarusian Confederation of Communities”, which was founded in 1987, and gathered together famous young leaders of the independence movement in 80s and  issued periodical “Community”.

For the consolidation of non-governmental organizations in December 1996, the “Community Centre” held the First Forum of NGO leaders in Belarus, initiated establishment of the  Assembly of Democratic NGOs – the largest association of democratic NGOs in the country. Currently there are about 30 memebers in the NGO “Community Center”.

Main aim of the organization is to build a civilized civil society in independent Belarus.

Objectives of NGO “Community center” are following:

• To help in implementation of various civic initiatives;

•  To study the stay of the civil society in Belarus;

• To support local independent press;

• To help Belarusian teachers’ and cultural initiatives that develop sense of belonging to European values.

Activities of NGO “Community Center” aim to support local civic initiatives, promotion of civic participation and the role of the civil society in the country.

In 1999 NGO “Community Center” along with other nongovernmental educational organizations started the program “Teacher. School. Society “- program of systematic methodical and civic education for teachers in Belarus. The purpose of the program is very simple: to make Belarusian education contemporary, prestigious and competitive. During the Program more than 3,000 teachers took part in it.

Lots of series of publications were produced with our help in the field of civic education, such as “Manual for civic leader”, “Handbook for Belarusian journalist”, “Methodological guide of Belarusian teacher”, “Innovative methods in the Belarusian school”, “Active Assesment”, a series of multimedia CDs “Growing Belarusians”.
